A 6 day Kashmir itinerary that actually works

Six days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Kashmir. It gives you two nights in Srinagar plus the three big day trips without spending your holiday in the car.

The plan at a glance

Day by day

  • Day 1: land at Srinagar, transfer to the houseboat, Nishat and Shalimar in the afternoon, shikara at golden hour.
  • Day 2: leave by 8 am for Gulmarg, gondola phase one, walk toward Khilanmarg, back to Srinagar by evening.
  • Day 3: stop at Pampore and Awantipora ruins, reach Pahalgam by lunch, afternoon by the Lidder.
  • Day 4: local taxi circuit to Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari, optional pony ride or trout lunch.
  • Day 5: drive back to Srinagar, old city bridges, Jamia Masjid, handicraft shopping with a fixed price guide.
  • Day 6: early Sonmarg run if the road is open, otherwise Doodhpathri, then airport drop.

Shorter and longer versions

Four days: Srinagar plus one of Gulmarg or Pahalgam. Anything more is rushed.

Eight days: add a second Pahalgam night, Doodhpathri and Yusmarg, or a Gurez extension in summer.

What to book ahead

  • Houseboat for the first night, especially April, May and December
  • Gondola tickets in winter and on weekends
  • A car with a Kashmir permit driver for the full trip rather than day by day
  • Pahalgam local taxi circuit, which runs on a fixed union rate

Common questions

Is 6 days enough for Kashmir?

Yes. Six days covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg comfortably, with one relaxed day in the middle.

Should I stay in a houseboat or a hotel?

One night on a houseboat and the rest in a hotel is the combination most travellers prefer, since houseboats are atmospheric but simpler on facilities.
