The short answer
March to May is the prettiest all round window (tulips, blossom, snow still on the peaks). December to February is the season for snowfall in Gulmarg. June to August suits families escaping the plains, and September to November brings clear skies, chinar colour and the calmest crowds.
Kashmir weather month by month
| Month | Typical Srinagar range | What it is good for |

| February | 0 to 10 C | Reliable snow, quieter than December, good ski conditions |
| March | 5 to 16 C | Almond blossom, early tulip preparation, fewer crowds |
| April | 9 to 21 C | Tulip Garden in bloom, green meadows, the busiest photo season |
| May | 12 to 25 C | Warm days, all high roads reopening, best for first time visitors |
| June | 16 to 30 C | Peak family season, Sonmarg and Pahalgam at their greenest |
| July | 18 to 30 C | Occasional rain, lush valleys, lower hotel rates than June |
| August | 18 to 29 C | Green and warm, good value, some rain days |
| September | 13 to 27 C | Clear skies, saffron fields waking up, comfortable walking |
| October | 7 to 22 C | Chinar leaves turning, crisp air, excellent photography |
| November | 2 to 15 C | Cold and quiet, lowest prices before the snow |
| December | -1 to 9 C | Christmas and new year snow, festive Gulmarg |
Best time to visit Kashmir for snowfall
For a first snowfall experience, plan the second week of December to the middle of February and base yourself in Gulmarg for at least two nights. Snow is never guaranteed on a single day, so we build a spare day into winter itineraries and keep a warm weather alternative such as Doodhpathri or the Srinagar gardens.
The Gulmarg Gondola is the main draw. Phase one runs most days in winter; phase two depends on wind and avalanche control, so treat it as a bonus rather than a fixed plan.
Best time for tulips
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar usually opens in the last week of March and stays open for roughly three to four weeks, depending on the winter. Early April is the safest booking window. Hotel rates in Srinagar rise sharply during the tulip festival, so we hold rooms early for anyone travelling in that window.
When roads and passes open
- Sonmarg road: usually open from late April to early November
- Zojila and Ladakh route: normally May to October, weather dependent
- Gulmarg and Pahalgam: open all year, chains sometimes needed in winter
- Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari: often restricted until the snow clears in April
Cheapest time to visit Kashmir
November, and then late January to early March once the new year rush is over, are the softest weeks for hotel rates. Flights into Srinagar are also cheaper midweek. If budget matters more than tulips or snow, that is where we point travellers.
Common questions
Which month has snow in Kashmir?
December, January and February are the reliable snow months in Gulmarg, with Srinagar itself getting a few snow days each winter.
Is April a good time to visit Kashmir?
April is the single most popular month. The Tulip Garden is open, the meadows are green and the peaks still hold snow, so book accommodation early.

Five to six nights covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg at a comfortable pace. Three nights only works if you stay around Srinagar.
