Srinagar
Dal Lake is the anchor. A houseboat night, a sunrise shikara to the floating vegetable market and an evening on the boulevard is the classic Srinagar day. Add Nishat and Shalimar gardens, Hazratbal, the old city bridges and Shankaracharya hill for the valley view.
Gulmarg
A meadow at 2,650 m that turns into India's best known ski town in winter. In summer it is gondola rides, golf, pony trails to Khilanmarg and easy walks through pine. Take a light jacket in every season.
Pahalgam
The Lidder valley, with Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari as the three side trips. Pahalgam suits travellers who want to walk, fish or simply sit by the river. Local union taxis handle the last stretch to each valley.
Sonmarg and Doodhpathri
Sonmarg is the glacier day: the Thajiwas trail, ponies, snow well into June. Doodhpathri stays quieter, a wide grass bowl with a shallow stream, ideal for families who want a slow day without crowds.
Less crowded alternatives
- Yusmarg for pine meadows without the tour buses
- Gurez valley for a two night add on in summer
- Aharbal waterfall on the way south
- Wular lake and Manasbal for birdwatching
- Kokernag and Verinag springs on a Pahalgam loop
Common questions
Which is the most beautiful place in Kashmir?
Most travellers pick Gulmarg in winter and Pahalgam in summer, with Dal Lake as the constant that everyone remembers.
Can Gulmarg and Pahalgam be done in one day?
No. They lie on opposite sides of the valley. Give each a separate day, or one night in Pahalgam and a day trip to Gulmarg.
