Tarsar Marsar trek: an Aru to alpine lakes guide

Tarsar Marsar trades a point-to-point traverse for an intimate lake journey from the Pahalgam side. It begins around Aru, follows the Lidder valley into the high meadows and rewards slow days at camp more than hurried tick-box walking.

Plan the route

Operators often allow roughly six to seven days for the wider trek, with different camps and route variations. Ask if the quoted duration includes the drive from Srinagar and whether Tarsar, Sundarsar and Marsar are actually on the proposed route.

Tarsar versus Marsar

Tarsar is commonly the lake where trekkers spend time close to the water. Marsar is frequently viewed from a ridge because the approach and weather conditions make a shoreline visit less straightforward. This distinction matters when an itinerary advertises both lakes as if they are identical stops. Sundarsar is another major lake on many circuits.

Who should choose this trek?

This is a multi-day camping trek for people who can walk for hours on several days running. It is often pitched as more approachable than Kashmir Great Lakes, but high camps, steep sections and changeable weather still demand preparation. A first-time high-altitude trekker should train, go with an experienced local team and leave room in the schedule for acclimatisation.

Season and conditions

July to September is the common high-altitude window. Early departures can meet lingering snow; later departures can have colder nights and shorter days. Stream crossings and campsite access depend on recent weather, so an exact daily plan may change even after the trek begins. Confirm current approvals and the operator's contingency plan before booking flights.

Getting to Aru and making a good start

Aru is around 12 km from Pahalgam. Arrive the day before walking if possible: it gives you time to check equipment, meet your guide and resolve transfer or document questions. If a Srinagar arrival is followed immediately by a long drive and a climb, fatigue can make the first day unnecessarily difficult.

Permissions, packing and safety

  • Ask the operator what current forest, camping and route permissions apply to your nationality and dates, and request confirmation before departure.
  • Bring waterproof layers, warm camp clothing, broken-in boots, sun protection, a headlamp and personal medicine.
  • Clarify tent sharing, sleeping-bag rating, meals, water treatment, porter load and pickup arrangements in writing.
  • Do not climb higher with worsening altitude symptoms. Tell your guide, descend if advised and seek medical attention when needed.
  • Keep waste out of the lakes and use designated campsites rather than creating new fire pits.

Choosing between a day walk and a lake trek

If your Kashmir holiday is under a week, a day walk from Aru or a single Lidderwat overnight is usually a better fit. Tarsar Marsar needs dedicated days, not only for the route but for arrival, gear checks and possible weather delays. The lake experience is best when you are not racing a flight home.

Common questions

Where does the Tarsar Marsar trek start?

Most itineraries start from Aru village near Pahalgam and go via Lidderwat. Confirm the exact start and finish with your operator.

How difficult is Tarsar Marsar?

It is a sustained high-altitude camping trek. It can suit a well-prepared beginner with a reputable guide, but it is not equivalent to a sightseeing walk.

Will I stand beside both Tarsar and Marsar?

Not necessarily. Marsar is often viewed from a ridge; check the specific route and weather before assuming a shoreline visit.
