For families

Kashmir with family, including kids and parents

Families need a slower version of the standard Kashmir route: shorter drives, one base for as long as possible and activities that work for a seven year old and a seventy year old on the same day.

How to pace it

Keep Srinagar as the base for the first three nights and run day trips out of it. Only move hotels once, to Pahalgam. That single change saves two packing days and a lot of complaints.

Altitude and comfort notes

  • Gulmarg gondola phase two reaches about 3,980 m, which is high for young children and anyone with heart or breathing conditions. Phase one is enough for most families.
  • Ponies at Pahalgam and Sonmarg are optional and priced separately, so agree the rate before you start.
  • Carry layers in every season. Meadow mornings are cold even in June.
  • Toilet stops are limited on the Sonmarg road, so plan the halts.

What children usually enjoy most

  • Shikara ride and the floating market
  • Snow play at Gulmarg or Sonmarg, with boots and gloves hired locally
  • Trout lunch by the Lidder in Pahalgam
  • Doodhpathri for a picnic day with space to run

Common questions

Is Kashmir suitable for elderly parents?

Yes, with a slower plan. Keep to Srinagar, Gulmarg phase one and the Pahalgam valleys, and avoid long pony rides or high trails.

What is the best month for a family trip?

June and July for a summer escape from the plains, and late December if the family specifically wants snow.
