When to go for snow

Snow usually settles in Gulmarg from December, and January and February are the most reliable months for deep snow. Chillai Kalan, the coldest spell of the year, runs from late December to late January. Early March can still be snowy up high while Srinagar starts to thaw.

Winter highlights

Roads and daylight

Heavy snowfall can close higher roads for a day or more, and daylight is short, so we keep drive days light and build one buffer day into most winter itineraries.

What to pack

• •Thermal base layers and a warm padded or down jacket
• •Waterproof boots with good grip
• •Gloves, woollen cap, scarf and warm socks
• •Sunglasses and sunscreen for snow glare
• •Lip balm and moisturiser for the dry cold

Plan for the snow you can reach

Snowfall is a weather event, not a scheduled attraction. Gulmarg is generally a stronger winter base than Srinagar if snow is the main goal, but access and activities still depend on conditions. Keep one flexible day for the gondola; a ticket does not guarantee operation in high wind or avalanche-control periods.

Winter hotel and transfer checklist

• •Ask whether room heating runs overnight and whether hot water is available at your usual bathing time.
• •Check whether your vehicle needs chains or a local change of vehicle on snowy roads.
• •Pack waterproof footwear rather than relying on rented boots for the whole trip.
• •Leave a time buffer before your flight, since road closures can affect transfers even after snowfall stops.
